- Well, of course the drinks had to be green, so we settled on Mojitos – perfect for the warm evening. Hobart may be one step short of Antarctica, but we’re the food capital... so we fed our guests on Smoked Dover Salmon, Barilla Bay Oysters, Tempura Huon Valley Mushrooms and spoonfuls of Chicken Jungle Curry – all in the beautiful Henry Jones Art Hotel, one of Tasmania’s entrepreneurial landmarks. A century ago it was the hub of the bottling and preserving industry when Tasmania’s major export was fruit. Now it’s Hobart’s favourite hotel, right on the waterfront.
Picnic and Peperoni
Account Manager Ali Brennan was recently spotted with Nyrstar Hobart's Jane Lonergan at the annual Nyrstar Smelters Picnic in Port Pirie, South Australia. On touring the wares on offer at the event the ladies bypassed the showbags and discovered the ideal way to buy a year's supply of pizza topping and each invested in a ONE METRE long peperoni.
Determined to take their prizes back to Hobart the pair raised a few laughs from security at Adelaide airport, and enthralled Hobart airport's sniffer dog.
Mission accomplished, Ali and Jane are now wondering if they'll be able to finish the peperoni before next year's Picnic comes around again.
Going green for tenby10
The Smelters Picnic this year, held on Wednesday 30th September, gave a great show of going green. The picnic is an annual event, and a public holiday for the town of Port Pirie so everyone around shows up for a great day out and some family fun and entertainment. The tenby10 activity at the picnic was given the theme 'Go green for tenby10' with the focus on promoting the actions people can take to reduce lead dust movement in their gardens. Not only was the grass green, due to more than usual rainfall in South Australia over winter, but the tshirts were green, balloons were green and the hugely popular prizes for the handball competition 'slap strapz' had the message 'Go green for tenby10'.
Green Teamer Ali Jones went to help out the tenby10 team. This year she took along her 3 year old son Toby, who quickly became the tenby10 mascot for the day and had great fun slapping the slap strapz onto any accommodating wrist.
The Festival of Voices inspires us all

The Federation Concert Hall has never sounded so good. More than 700 singers took to the stage in an extraordinary concert featuring visiting Choral Directors Mike Brewer (UK), Malcolm Dalgliesh (USA), Myron and Timberlyn Butler (USA), and Mark O'Leary (Aus) and a special performance by a capella group Suade. Choirs from across Australia participated and the Festival workshop participants brought new repertoire to life in dynamic and breathtaking performances. The Concert was broadcast live across Australia on ABC Radio National and compered by ABC presenter Christopher Lawrence. It was a packed house and a spectatcular finale to this vibrant 4 days that has seen Hobart come alive with song. Thank you to all who made this, the 5th Festival of Voices, such an extraordinary success.
